National Geographic has a wonderful photographer’s guide with advice from some of the best photographers in the world. Use their guides to help you take pictures of people, landscapes, and experiences. One of our favorite articles from National Geographic is their “Tips for Better iPhone Photography.” Photographer Cotton Coulson gives this advice: “Whether I’m shooting in portrait or landscape mode, I like to hold the iPhone with my left hand and release the shutter with my right thumb. I recently learned that the camera shutter isn’t released until you take your thumb off the shutter button on the touch screen. Try gently releasing the button and see for yourself if that doesn’t work for you. For me, it’s made all the difference, especially when shooting indoors in low and mixed lighting conditions.” Use their tips to achieve the best pictures possible — even when all you have is an iPhone.
If you’re a fan of Fujifilm Instax cameras or Polaroids, check out this article from Fujifilm: 10 Tips for Capturing Beautiful Instax Photos. One of our favorite pieces of advice from them is to “get candid.” Take pictures that reflect “real life” or that reflect the personality of your subject. Don’t be afraid to wait to get the shot that perfectly encapsulates the person or the experience.
Learn How to Compose Your Photos
Perfect your photo’s composition before you take the shot. Exposure Guide recommends that you “compose in thirds.” The rule of thirds states that your photo will look better if your subject is not at the center of the photograph. This rule is, of course, not hard and fast, but it’s a great tip for beginners to try out.
